What reformer pilates is

The reformer is a machine with a sliding carriage that moves along rails against spring resistance. Unlike mat pilates, the resistance is adjusted for every exercise and every body — which is why the same class works for a complete beginner and for someone with years of practice.

The work is slow and controlled, focused on deep muscles, posture and breathing. There is no jumping or impact and the resistance can be turned right down, which makes it a good way back into exercise after a long break. If you have back pain or an injury, check with your doctor first.

Who it is for

  • Beginners who have not trained in a while and want to start with controlled, gradual loading.
  • People with desk jobs who want to get their back moving and strengthen the muscles that support good posture.
  • Mat pilates practitioners looking for more load and variety.
  • Pregnant women and new mothers — only with your doctor's approval and by prior arrangement with us.
  • Athletes looking for stability, balance and mobility alongside strength training.

How your first class goes

  1. Arrive 5–10 minutes early so we can show you the studio and fill in a short form about injuries and health considerations.
  2. Your instructor sets the reformer up for your height and level and explains how the springs work.
  3. The class starts with breathing and a warm-up, moves through full-body exercises and finishes with stretching. 50 minutes in total.
  4. Afterwards we talk through how your body felt and which package makes sense for your goal.
